Itinerary Overview
Axum is one of the ancient cities of prehistoric Ethiopia BC. The Kingdom of Axum is the pinnacle of ancient Abyssinian civilization and the governmental center there. The Queen of Sheba is a historical and legendary woman associated with the biblical King Solomon of Israel. Her kingdom was located in Axum. According to legend, her son was born after she visited King Solomon, who brought the Ark of the Covenant to Axum and visited his father, King Solomon, in Jerusalem. The ruins of her palace are still present in the Axum district.

It is believed that the Ark of the Covenant is on display in the present-day chapels of the Christian faithful in Axum, as it is believed that the power of the Ark prevents anyone from seeing or touching it, and only priests authorized by the Church are allowed to approach it.

Axum is also known for its tallest monuments, 24 meters long and weighing 160 tons. They were erected in the 4th century in the Kingdom of Axum; the erection of obelisks usually marks royal burial chambers and is decorated with multi-story false windows and false doors.

Axum is the birthplace of Ethiopian Christianity and was a trading center for the Mediterranean Peninsula and the southern Arabian nations.

  • After breakfast, we drive 52 km to the Yeha Temple in the town of Yeha. It is considered the oldest temple in Africa. The stone tower is built in the Sabaean style, common throughout much of sub-Saharan Africa.
  • The Moon Temple dominates the small town and is considered by many to be the country's pre-Aksumite capital. It was built in honor of the god Almougah and dates back to around 700 BC, during the reign of D'mt.
  • The journey continues to Debre Damo, a 6th-century monastery on a plateau. The monastery houses a gallery of Ethiopia's oldest illuminated manuscripts. Over 150 monks live here and earn their living through livestock farming, agriculture, and the use of deep, rock-cut water reservoirs. This is an example of the disciplined life of self-sufficient monks in the deep desert.
  • To reach the monastery, you'll have to climb a 15-meter-high cliff. A thick leather rope will make the ascent easier. The monks will tie a second rope around your torso to make the climb easier. (Women are not allowed to climb.)
  • Return to the town of Axum for lunch and stay in Axum for the rest of the day, where you may have opportunities for socializing and cultural discovery.
  • We travel to Axum Airport according to our flight schedule and fly back to Addis Ababa.
Farewell Night
  • Upon arrival in the city, we'll have lunch (if we arrive early), rest a bit, and enjoy an early dinner in one of Ethiopia's best jazz or (reggae optional) lounges, or in one of the most beautiful dance and folklore houses with a traditional coffee ceremony. This concludes the four-day trip.
  • This tour originally began in Addis Ababa and continued to Axum, Yeha, and Debre Damo. Upon request, it can be extended to other parts of Tigray. Tigray is a land of numerous historical sites, including millennia-old monolithic churches, mosques, and palaces from more recent history.
